Living Choices

The Village of Winston Park, a unique condominium, retirement and nursing home facility in Kitchener-Waterloo, believes this feeling of community is vital to creating a comfortable environment, while preserving as many options and choices as the resident enjoyed in their previous home. This environment encourages independence, while offering care and support appropriate to individual needs. Nothing inspires a feeling of community like a stroll down Main Street. A place where friends can meet, maybe share a cup of coffee in a cozy café and then wander through an array of interesting shops.

Winston Park actually has its own indoor Main Street and Town Square, re-created with the same charm and activity that brings life to a small town. The avenue is lined with brick, street lights, benches and flower pots as well as authentic storefronts offering their wares. A visit to the hair salon, the library, the pub, the hobby shop, even the general store, all of these outings are safe, fun and stimulating and a feature of the Winston Park. Main Street also includes the Chapel, Fireside Lounge, Community Centre and our Fitness Centre.

A retirement community is on the one hand, a part of a larger community unto itself. Therefore, it is important to establish relationships within the larger KW community as well as design a complex that promotes feeling of community and neighbourhood within the resident population. This is what the Main Street and Town Square attempt to achieve in a deliberate and tangible way.

Winston Park offers Retirement Suites, complete with a Supportive Care Neighbourhood for those individuals with memory loss, and our Assisted Care Neighbourhood is for individualsrequiring increased physcial care. We also offer convalescant/respite care in our Retirement Village.

It's wonderful to be able to be able to offer a complete continuum of care for the seniors of our community. Residents and families feel comforted knowing they will be able to make their home within the community, should their care level change. With 5 levels of care, we attempt to provide the physical and spiritual needs of all, as well as offering a stimulating lifestyle, ensuring a sense of security and stability. We hope to alleviate the care burden presented to families so that visiting can be a time of enjoyment and participation in any number of social and recreational events offered at Winston Park.

Winston Park actually dates back over 30 years, offering care to seniors in this region. The previous facility was located on Woolwich Street in Kitchener until 1991, when Phase I of the new facility was completed at Westmount and Block Line Road in Kitchener. Phase II followed in the fall of 1996. The success of these two phases led us to the completion and opening of Phase III in the fall of 1999 - a continuation in that commitment to offering care to all seniors, as they enter new stages in their lives.

"The Village of Winston Park" and "The Retirement Apartments of Winston Park", are intended not only to be a place where seniors live and receive care, but also an active, vibrant community as exemplified by the Main Street and Town Square.

The most important difference which Winston Park has to offer is its continuum of care. In simple terms, this means that a senior who moves to Winston Park will not have to worry about dealing with the stress and anxiety of moving later on, if their medical situation changes. Winston Park is able to offer every stage of care, ensuring a sense of security and stability.

There are other benefits to this continuum as well. If a couple moves into one of the retirement units or apartments and one partner has a stroke, the couple can remain together. The one partner may move within the same facility, while the other partner can remain close by. It is also less stressful for the families of our residents. They don't have to worry about the stress and trauma of moving their parents at a later stage when care needs have increased.

Dedicated recreation staff will provide a wide range of programs for your selection. Residents will be encouraged to participate in programs. We gather residents to encourage them to participate in programs. We also provide some one on one programming for residents who do not function well in group activities.

With our 5 different levels of care, Winston Park also offers excellent care for seniors who are mildly to severely confused due to dementia and Alzheimer Disease. The Special Care Home Area in the Long Term Care and the Supportive Care Floor in the Retirement Village are specially designed for residents with memory loss to allow them to move safely indoors and to have free access to secured outdoor patios.

Once outdoors, Winston Park has nine and a half acres of attractively landscaped grounds to be explored through safe and easy walks. Outdoors also offers a little light gardening or relaxation in the gazebo. When the skies turn grey, residents can venture around indoors and find many exciting activities to take part in; such as baking or woodworking, or one of the popular courses offered by the Waterloo Separate School Board in the Community Centre. In the Town Square, residents can also enjoy an oak paneled library with a cozy fireplace, or a lively pub called Winnie's with card tables and a dart board or watch TV, a movie or play a game of pool or shuffleboard in the Fireside Lounge.

When moving about to these different activities, residents will be happy to know that they don't have to deal with stairs and elevators. Winston Park's Retirement Living is designed as one floor. This one floor feature ensures easy access to the outside grounds, Main Street or the Town Square is only one of the many unique and innovative features at Winston Park.

When a little quiet time is needed, Winston Park offers spacious and friendly private rooms. Private rooms are complete with a three-piece bath. Each room also has individually controlled heating and air conditioning as well as a small kitchenette. Rooms have a door leading directly out onto the seniors' private patio and to the grounds of Winston Park.

Winston Park's approach is genuinely holistic, focusing not only on physical and medical needs, but also on the social, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of every resident. Winston Park has 24 hour on site Registered Nurses. Pharmacy, Podiatry, Dentistry, Opthomology, Audiology, Physiotherapy, Kineisiology, Occupational Therapy, Speech and nutritional counseling services are all available within the facility. Winston Park also has an extensive recreation program carried out by recreation staff and volunteers. Strong community links have been formed with different service clubs in KW which is mutually benefiting both groups.
