Aspen Lake learns more about culture change

Each neighbourhood offers opportunities for residents, families and team members

At the Village of Aspen Lake, the idea of changing the culture of aging is well understood by the team members who contribute to the realization of aspirations to enhance resident experiences.

But the team recently realized it could do a better job of informing residents and family members about what’s happening, so a series of community meetings meant to spread the word began in May and will wrap up in June.

Recreation therapist Kristel Bulthuis recalls heading into the Carrington neighbourhood at the Village of Wentworth Heights to help run an activity one day a little while ago. Other team members from outside the recreation department were helping transfer residents and they already had music blasting as they danced along.

At the Village of Erin Meadows it came as no surprise to either general manager Ash Agarwal or nursing director Denis Safirovski that Pamela Croucher was named to the 2012 Toronto Star Nightingale Honour Roll on May 10.

The fact that she was nominated by the family of a resident makes perfect sense as well, they say, for Pamela is a nurse who embodies an aura of assurance that lets families know their loved ones are well cared for.

“With osteoarthritis in my knees and shoulders, I spend a lot of time in my recliner chair or in my motorized wheelchair, but my hands can still operate knitting needles,” says Winston Park’s Agnes Reist.

Those knitting needles and the hundreds of dolls the hands that guide them have created in the past three years have helped change lives for orphaned children and children who have disabilities at the Matangwe School in Kenya.
