There is a physiological response in the human body at the touch of a plant of the scent of a flower and based on Ron Schlegel’s vision, the Villages are always working towards creating thoughtful, intentional and beautiful outdoor spaces for the residents of Schlegel Villages, their guests and the team members who work alongside them.
Honey Bees
At select Schlegel Villages, honey bee hives are helping to create vibrant outdoor spaces where people and nature can thrive together. Bees play a vital role in pollinating the plants that support healthy ecosystems and food production, and our hives provide an opportunity for residents, team members, and families to learn about and appreciate their important work. Caring for honey bees reflects our commitment to stewardship, lifelong learning, and creating meaningful connections with the natural world. As our bees flourish, so too do the gardens, green spaces, and communities they help sustain.
Our pollinator gardens are thoughtfully cultivated to support bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators that contribute to a healthy environment. Filled with native flowers and seasonal colour, these gardens create beautiful outdoor spaces that invite residents, families, and team members to gather, explore, and enjoy time in nature. They are places of beauty, reflection, and connection—supporting not only biodiversity, but also the well-being that comes from spending time outdoors. By nurturing these gardens, we are creating spaces where both people and pollinators can flourish.
At Schlegel Villages, outdoor spaces are thoughtfully designed to nurture well-being, connection and a sense of calm for residents, families and team members. Guided by landscape specialist Adriaan Sizoo, these gardens and courtyards are more than beautiful settings, they are places where people can reconnect with nature, engage in meaningful activities and share knowledge across generations. From raised garden beds to vibrant community spaces, each Village is encouraged to embrace the outdoors as an essential part of daily life, reinforcing the simple but powerful truth that nature has something to offer everyone.
A revitalized courtyard at Coleman Care Centre is now a living tribute to resident Herman Hess, whose love of nature continues to inspire those around him. Brought to life through the efforts of volunteers, community partners and the Senior Wish Association, the garden offers residents a peaceful place to walk, reflect and connect. Rooted in memory and care, the space stands as a meaningful reminder of how community collaboration can honour a life while creating something beautiful for others to enjoy.
