Over the past couple of weeks, the Schlegel family and everyone across the Villages have been touched by the love shared in memory of Ron Schlegel.
Messages have come from residents, families, team members, partners and friends near and far. Some remembered Ron pulling up a chair beside them at a team member appreciation event and asking for a photo. Others remembered his Sunday visits with Barb, when he’d ask team members about their passions and what could make life in the Village even better. Every message has reminded us how many lives Ron touched, often in quiet, personal ways.
To each of you who has shared a memory, sent a message or simply paused to think of Ron: thank you. Your kindness has meant a great deal to the Schlegel family and to all of us.
A tribute in the House of Commons
Ron’s impact reached far beyond the Villages. Tim Louis, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Conestoga, recently honoured Ron in the House of Commons and shared these words:
“Today, I stood in the House of Commons to honour the life and legacy of Ron Schlegel, whose compassion and generosity left a lasting mark on Kitchener-Conestoga and the Waterloo Region. Through Ron’s leadership in senior care, research and community building, he left a legacy that will continue through the communities and lives he touched. My heartfelt condolences to the Schlegel family, and to all those who had the opportunity to know him. Our community is stronger because of Ron, and his impact will carry on for generations to come.”

Share your memory of Ron
We want to keep these stories close, so we’re gathering them in one place. In partnership with KinCapsule, we’re collecting written messages, photos, videos, audio recordings and more. Everything shared will become a book for the Schlegel family.
Whether you knew Ron for decades or met him once, your story matters. It might be a conversation you still remember, a photo of the two of you or something he taught you. It doesn’t need to be long. A few heartfelt words are enough.
