A New Schlegel Village Slated for Toronto's Leaside Neighbourhood

Schlegel Villages is looking forward to becoming part of Toronto's Leaside community through the development of a new Village that will encompass the full continuum of care, from Long-term Care to fully-independent apartments for older adults. The vision is to create a new Schlegel Village that becomes a meaningful part of the Leaside community, where older adults live vibrantly with the support they need to remain connected and experience a strong sense of belonging.

The focus in the first phase of development proposal, which will be brought before Toronto City Council a before the end of 2026, will serve long-term care residents to help meet the growing demand for long-term care supports in Toronto.

Expanding Eldercare and Senior’s Housing Options in Toronto

It is estimated that more than 700 long-term care beds have disappeared from Toronto in recent years. The proposed Village would help more older adults remain in Toronto, close to family, friends, faith communities, healthcare providers, and the neighbourhoods they know. This project would build redeveloped and newly developed long-term care beds, helping to address the growing need for long-term care spaces within Toronto while helping people remain connected to their communities. A future phase of development will also add retirement suites to the Village, offering everything from memory care and assisted living to fully-independent seniors apartments.

It will feature the unique Main Street concept, with all the amenities Schlegel Villages has come to be known for. Main Street stems from the Town Square, which is designed as a gathering place where residents, families, team members, volunteers, and visitors can connect through everyday experiences and community life.

   • The planning application will be submitted to the City of Toronto for review before the end of 2026, and there will be several opportunities to engage with the community throughout the planning application process.
