Barb Schlegel had a rare gift—the ability to make everyone she met feel like the most important person in the room. She truly cared about people, taking the time to learn their stories, understand their passions, and give of herself through countless volunteer efforts.
Her kindness and dedication left a lasting impact on those who knew her, and it’s only fitting that an award was created in her honour to celebrate the exceptional contributions of our volunteers.
In these amazing volunteers, we see people of all backgrounds with many varied connections to their respective Village.
People like Eraldo, who began volunteering at Humber Heights nearly a decade ago, but had to stop during the challenges of the pandemic. He so loved the Village atmosphere that when his wife needed support, she moved in and he now returns to visit her and give of his time to others.
“Volunteering at HH makes me feel good to give back to the community and I go home happy each day, Eraldo says. “The team, family and residents make me feel welcome and appreciated.”
Others, like Chuck at Taunton Mills, live within the Village and choose to do a range of things in support of neighbours.
“Chuck is a dedicated volunteer who brings joy and energy to our village in so many ways,” the team said in Chuck’s nomination. “Whether assisting with lively sing-alongs in the Egerton Neighbourhood, lending a helping hand in the dining room, or assisting with mail delivery, he’s always ready to support fellow residents and team members.”
As we recognize the many generous hearts during Volunteer Appreciation Week this year, 18 volunteers have been awarded the Barb Schlegel Volunteer Award. In their own unique ways, they embody Barb’s spirit, making their Village community stronger simply by being part of it.
